In the latest big feature-length project from the live-streaming service, Netflix have announced that Brad Pitt will star in a satirical look at NATO’s occupation of Afghanistan entitled War Machine. Staring alongside Pitt is an impressive cast that includes Emory Cohen, Topher Grace, Anthony Michael Hall, Will Poulter, Lakeith Stanfield, Meg Tilly, Tilda Swinton, and Sir Ben Kingsley.
Inspired by the book The Operators: The Wild & Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan, War Machine follows hot-shot General Glenn McMahon’s (played by Pitt) roller-coaster rise and fall. Writer-director David Michod describes it as “An absurdist war story”, something that Pitt will be all to familiar with following his role in Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds.
Michod’s exploration of the a dark chapter in American history offers a sly take on a charismatic four-star general being thrust into the limelight in command of NATO forces in Afghanistan, only to have his life and reputation shattered by an ambitious journalist’s attack exposé. The story serves as an allegory for the dark heart of folly that NATO forces jumped into with their invasion and long-standing occupation of Afghanistan.
Pitt is not the only Hollywood superstar attracted by the growing popularity of Netflix online-exclusive releases. Will Smith will be staring in the upcoming Bright and Charlize Theron is set to star in the original series, Mindhunter.
With an impressive cast and a decisive and possibly highly entertaining subject, War Machine promised to be one of this summer’s biggest hits.
Expect to enjoy War Machine from the comfort of your comfiest couch on May, 26 2017.
