Following the traditional post credit scene at the end of the first Deadpool movie in which the man himself hinted that Cable would feature in Deadpool 2, speculation has run rampant regarding the possible casting for the role. The scene had a few ideas of it’s own, with Wade offering, “It could be Mel Gibson, Dolph Lundgren, Keira Knightley? She’s got range, who knows.” However, after months of speculation, it would seem the front-runner has emerged as Nocturnal Animals’ star, Michael Shannon.
Shannon is no stranger to the superhero cannon following his portal as General Zod in 2013’s DC Superman blockbuster, Man of Steel. The film received very little critical acclaim with Shannon’s performance not faring much better. However, within the Marvel Universe, his intense personality and dedication to the roles he plays, could give a life to the Cable character that would do it the justice fans are hoping it will.
Other contenders in the race to become Cable have included David Harbour (Stranger Things), Kyle Chandler (Manchester by the Sea) and Pierce Brosnan (James Bond). However, each of these contenders seem to have been discarded from the pile of potential actors to play the iconic X-Men character.
Although Shannon is now consider the favourite to play the character, scheduling may make it difficult to for the 42-year-old actor to fulfill his role in Deadpool 2. Shannon is set to star in an independent film entitled What They Had which is set to start filming in Spring. Deadpool 2 will begin filming in Summer. That leaves less than 3 months for Shannon to fulfill his obligations to What They Had before joining the Deadpool 2 cast, an unlikely scenario.
So, does the search continue?
The Deadpool 2 release date is yet to be confimred.
